Why can someone be evicted?
Some examples of why a landlord might evict someone include:
- The rent wasn’t paid
- The rent is paid late frequently
- Illegal acts on the property
- Damage to the apartment or property
- Landlord or their family member wants to move in
Note: A landlord cannot evict someone because of a disagreement (e.g., a landlord doesn’t like your client) or because of personal characteristics (e.g., race, gender, family status, sexual orientation, etc.).
How You Can Help:
How you can support a client going through an eviction will depend on the stage of the eviction process and the type of eviction. For more information, see: “Stages of Eviction”.
