How is Emergency Assistance different from Ontario Works income assistance?

Emergency Assistance is different from Ontario Works’ regular income assistance in three key ways:

  • Applicants have fewer requirements: Emergency Assistance can be provided even when an applicant doesn’t have all the information or documentation required to apply for the regular Ontario Works income assistance program or where they are still waiting for a decision about their regular Ontario Works application. Applicants are also not required to meet employment participation requirements (e.g., finding a job, completing training programs, etc.)
  • It isn’t provided on a long-term basis: Emergency assistance is not usually provided for more than 48 days. If an applicant thinks they will need ongoing assistance, they will be encouraged to make a full application to the regular Ontario Works income assistance program.
  • It’s not typically available on a repeat basis: Emergency Assistance is typically only provided once in a 6-month period.
