How can someone reapply for Ontario Works?
General Rule: Your client can reapply for assistance from Ontario Works, but how they reapply will vary depending on the last time they received income support from the program.
If they received support:
- In the last 1–3 months: They can request their support be reinstated as long as they have served their period of ineligibility mandated by Ontario Works (if any). If their reinstatement request is denied, they might need to reapply. Ontario Works should tell your client whether they can use a previous application or if they need to complete a new application.
- More than 1–3 months ago but less than 6 months: They can reapply with their previous application, but they might need provide additional information, if Ontario Works asks for it.
- More than 6 months ago but less than 1 year: They might be able to reapply using their previous application, but Ontario Works might ask them to complete a new application.
- More than 1 year ago: They will need to complete a new application.
How You Can Help:
- If your client wants to dispute a decision to cancel their support payments, refer them to a legal clinic and make sure they bring their Notice of Decision, if they have it. If your client can’t receive legal advice, help them complete a form letter for internal review or draft their own letter. Make sure they submit their request within 30 days from when they received the Notice of Decision about the cancellation.
- If your client wants to re-apply for support, ask them how long it has been since they last received assistance from Ontario Works and help them gather and organize the required documentation for their application.
