How can someone start an application for Ontario Works?

There are three ways to begin an application for Ontario Works:

  1. Online
  2. In Person
  3. By Phone

In some circumstances, Ontario Works might ask an applicant to attend in person. Some examples of when this might happen:

  • The applicant is in crisis or emergency situation
  • The applicant is reapplying within one year of a previous application
  • The applicant is 16 or 17 years old and not living with their parent(s)

Once your client has submitted a complete application, if Ontario Works decides they are eligible, they should receive assistance within four working days from their initial contact (either by phone, in person or online).

How You Can Help:

  • Step 1: Help your client gather and organize the required documentation for application.
  • Step 2: If more than 4 working days have passed since your client’s initial contact with Ontario Works and they haven’t received a decision, help them contact the social assistance office.
