What if someone is moving to a new home?

General Rule: Someone who is moving to a new place might be eligible for additional allowances. These are provided at the discretion of Ontario Works and can include:

  • New Residence Payments: Funds for someone establishing a new place of living.
  • Moving Expenses: Funds to help pay the costs of moving furniture and personal effects.
  • Essential Household Items: Funds to replace or repair essential household items.
  • Rental Deposits: Funds for rent deposits and fuel and hydro deposits.

How You Can Help:

  • Step 1: Help your client contact their caseworker if they might be eligible for these additional allowances or have any questions about them.
  • Step 2: If your client requests any of these allowances but is denied and wants to dispute the decision, refer them to a legal clinic and make sure they bring a copy of their Notice of Decision, if they have it.
  • Step 3: If your client can’t receive legal advice, help them complete a form letter for internal review or draft their own letter. Make sure they submit their request within 30 days from when they received the Notice of Decision about the discretionary allowance.
