What is a civil legal issue?

Civil Legal Issues are issues that can be resolved through a formal legal process. They are not criminal law or prison law issues. Some examples of a civil legal issue include:

  • Losing access to income support due to incarceration
  • Being evicted from home for an illegal act
  • Being expelled from school due to justice involvement
  • Working overtime but not getting paid
  • Dealing with child custody issues

Civil legal issues are different from civil legal needs. Civil Legal Needs are needs that are created by civil legal issues, and they are needs which require prompt, accessible and responsive legal services, advice and/or resources to address the civil legal issue(s).
